The Best Way to Train Your German Shepherd For Personal Protection

Covering the full scope of how to train your GSD for personal protection requires professional expertise.

But you don't need to be a professional in order to learn the basics of personal protection training.

Thankfully, all dogs have some basic instinctual desire to protect their owners. And GSDs are certainly no different.

These dogs are renowned for their devotion and loyalty to their owners, stopping at nothing to protect them.

This is one of the major defining traits of the breed.

That being said, there are some basic things to keep in mind if you wish to take the guarding instincts of your dog to the next level.

A capable personal protection dog needs to be confident and capable, and know how to distinguish actual threats from friendly strangers.

Basic steps to training a personal protection German Shepherd are reasonably straightforward and include the following:

  • Socialization
  • Beginner prey work
  • Triggering work
  • Temperament evaluation – 6 months or older
  • Advanced prey work
  • Defense work – 11 to 14 months or older
  • And finally making the transition to developing a competitive or fighting drive which involves real-life simulations – 18 months or older

They're a national rescue of 17 years and have a sister rescue in LA that is a GSD rescue as well.

They do need help getting the word out that they're trying to find fosters in all states.
