The 9 Best German Shepherd Hip Pain Home Remedies

German Shepherds are unfortunately prone to hip dysplasia, which occurs when the hip joints form abnormally as puppies.

German Shepherds are also prone to developing hip pain due to their larger size which can place extra pressure on the joints.

Thankfully, we can take steps to ensure our dog’s quality of life is maintained, and that they remain comfortable.

1. Make sure your German Shepherd is kept warm since cold temperatures can affect your dog’s joints.

During the winter months, place extra cozy blankets in their bed area.

Padded mats are also great for them to lay on if they like to alternate between the bed and the floor.

2. It’s also important to keep your German Shepherd hydrated.

Water helps to maintain the sponginess of cartilage.

For an extra burst of hydration, consider adding moisture-rich foods into their bowls like cucumber and fresh carrots.

3. Gently massaging your dog’s hips and surrounding areas can also help.

Massaging while grooming with a specialized mitt works great, but using your hands while having a cuddle is fine too.

To avoid causing extra pain, massage the affected area using long, gliding strokes that aren’t applying too much pressure.

4. You can also consider taking your dog to water therapy.

GSDs are known for being young at heart and will keep their playful spirit throughout all of their lives.

A great way for them to release pent-up aggression without causing any undue pressure on their hip joints is through swimming.

5. Also be sure to cover slippery floors.

Slipping can make hip pain worse, and could even cause an increase in inflammation.

6. Adding anti-inflammatory nutrients into your dog’s diet can also help.

Safe foods that you can give your German Shepherd are papaya, very small amounts of ginger, and blueberries.

7. Heating pads are another great pain reliever.

Heat has the ability to decrease inflammation and help to soothe joint pain and will improve the circulation surrounding the hip joints.

If you don’t want to use a heating pad, then you could opt for a large heating mat that’ll be big enough for your dog to lay on.

8. You should also continue taking your dog on regular walks where it can set the pace.

Light to moderate exercise will help keep your dog fit, while also helping increase the health of its joints.

Frequent and short walks on soft ground that last around 15 minutes are also better than longer walks.

9. Turmeric powder has also shown positive effects on reducing inflammation.

But since it doesn’t have the greatest taste, many owners opt for turmeric supplement pills.
